HGTV Failed Me

In case you're wondering, HGTV's suggestion to get rid of the burnt microwave popcorn odor by boiling water and vanilla extract in the microwave did not work. In fact, now my kitchen smells like burnt vanilla-flavored popcorn, which is even worse than regular burnt popcorn. I'm going to have to bust out the volatile chemicals if the odor doesn't abate soon.

Who's actually testing these unhelpful hints out? Is there a laboratory kitchen where this stuff can be given proper scientific scrutiny, or did some punk kid with the marijuana giggles send the vanilla extract idea to HGTV as a joke? I want answers, dammit!

For some reason I thought vinegar was supposed to get rid of gross smells. Is there a Hints from Heloise website?

This happened to my Mom when I was visiting over Christmas. The smell went away when she bought a new microwave.

What the hell are you doing messing around with microwave popcorn anyhow? Get the real stuff, and use butter! Baking soda on a paper towel moistened with water is good to use for a non-abrasive scrub, and keeping a glass container of it in the microonda when you're not using it will help absorb odor. Thanks for the tough love, Rantor. I just switched from margarine to nice European-style butter, so maybe I'll go ahead and start eating real popcorn again, too.

And while I'm out there issuing dietary edicts, stay away from diet carbonated beverages, and that goes for lite beer as well. Better a teaspoon of Haagen-Dazs ice cream than a tub of sherbet.
