The Bong Tolls for Tootie

I didn't know what a bong was until I watched the "pot episode" of The Facts of Life.

Believe it or not, you really could buy bongs at some record stores in 1980. It was a "heady" time. That said, I can't imagine where a couple of 12-year-old girls would've pulled together enough bread to buy three of them. All that just to hold jellybeans!

I'll never forget Spencer Gifts at Richmond Mall in Richmond Heights, Ohio, circa 1978. The aroma of Gonesh #4 (perfumes of orchards and vines), cigarettes, and merchandise, loud music, and a beautiful selection of bongs illuminated by a black light behind the cash register. My mom never let me go in there, ever. Which only made me want to go in there more. Now I have a bong of my own, but it's nowhere near as cool as the ones from Spencer Gifts. Moral of the story: Let your kids go into Spencer, or they'll grow up to be gay.
